Fujitsu ScanSnap S510M

The latest model, the ScanSnap S510M  (the Mac version of this product), improves on the original model’s already good design with faster performance and smarter software Since we reviewed the original Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner more than two years ago, the ScanSnap has gone through two more incarnations.

The scanner automatically detects the paper’s size, orientation, and whether the document is in color. It can churn through stacks of up to 50 sheets of paper at a time, scanning both sides of the page at once (with a rated top speed of 18 sheets, or 36 sides, per minute—up from 15 sheets per minute on the original model). Unlike flatbed scanners made primarily for scanning images, the ScanSnap has a compact, upright design more appropriate for scanning documents. The ScanSnap’s 600-dpi optical resolution is ideal for scanning office documents and adequate, if not terrific, for photographs.

The S510M also includes Acrobat 8 Professional, a $449 value by itself, though FineReader alone does as much processing as most users will need Saving scanned documents as printable, high-resolution images is useful, but being able to search, select, and copy the text in your scans is better still. But the S510M makes the process much easier thanks to its ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap software, which can perform OCR automatically (and in many languages). You could accomplish this with the original ScanSnap by manually using the OCR feature of the included Adobe Acrobat 7 Standard or by employing an AppleScript Folder Action.

Aside from that problem, all the one-click options worked as they should By default, when you scan a document (by pressing the Scan button), a ScanSnap Quick Menu window appears, offering an array of one-click actions: saving your scan to a folder, sending it as an e-mail enclosure (Scan2E-mail), printing it, adding it to iPhoto, or using FineReader to create a searchable PDF. The S510M’s updated ScanSnap Manager software offers some convenient new options, too. You can enclose scans in an Entourage message by setting Entourage as ScanSnap’s default application, but then you must manually change the settings if you want to do something else with your next scan. Unfortunately, the Quick Menu window’s Scan2E-mail feature works only with Apple Mail, not Entourage. You can opt to skip this window, and instead select one action that will apply to all scanned documents until you change the selection; available actions include sending the scan directly to another application, such as DevonThink Pro Office.

I encountered no jams when scanning creased or wrinkled sheets, or even pages torn out of a loose-leaf notebook. If you scan a document while FineReader is busy processing a previous scan, you’ll get an error message; after the first OCR finishes, you’ll have to drag the new scan onto the FineReader icon manually or use the above Acrobat folder action It also lets you scan some oversize documents: if you fold a tabloid-size (11-by-17-inch, or A3) sheet in half and put it in the carrier, ScanSnap Manager can “unfold” the resulting scan into a single full-size image. Also, be aware that the scanner will work with the Mac OS as far back as Jaguar (10. 2. 8), but if you want to use Adobe Acrobat, you’ll need to be running Tiger; and FineReader requires 10. The S510M is better than the original ScanSnap at detecting page orientation for small sheets of paper; it’s also much less prone to sending through multiple sheets at a time. The S510M includes a plastic carrier sheet that you can use to feed small, delicate, or irregularly shaped documents through the scanner. The only real irritation was that the FineReader software can’t keep up with the S510M—or queue scans for later OCR. 3 or higher.

My buying advice

If you want to turn your paper archives into searchable PDFs, it doesn’t get any easier than the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510M. At $495 it’s not cheap—but its bundled software alone is worth far more than the scanner itself.

Fujitsu SCANSNAP S1100 CLR 600DPI USB Mobile Scanner

I have adopted this product line at my workplace for personal scanners, and we have never had a failure. They're fast, reliable, durable and this model is no different. I love the ScanSnap line and have had several models. I would definitely choose this model for the mobile traveling worker I've also owned the model slightly larger than this, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Mobile Scanner (PA03603-B005).

The quality of scans is completely satisfactory, and honestly this little device does much better with tiny thin pieces of paper like receipts as compared to some of the larger models-- that are designed for a whole stack of paper-- and from time to time will skew a thin tiny receipt sideways and crinkle it up It's tiny, feels well constructed, and does not require external power. The software installation is quick is easy. It works just fine once you realize what's going on there. This is the first ultra mobile Scansnap, and I cannot convey how impressed I am with it! If you've used a scansnap this one puts the brakes on and reverses you-- the paper actually feeds in the front and out the back-- Opposite of all Scansnaps. It does not come with Adobe Acrobat Full version, like some of the older models used to include. ) this is clearly my most preferred choice for a mobile scanner. The device is literally about the size of two snickers bars put end to end. Those couple of drawbacks considered, if you are a mobile road warrior who needs to scan on the go, (signed paperwork, business cards, receipts, etc. It does not scan double sided as do many of the other Scansnap devices.

If you travel or fly daily, or move from client to client during the day and want the smallest lightest option, this would be my recommended option. As I continue to have the scanner longer I will plan to update the review. It would be perfect for sales forces, insurance company members, consultants, and others who go from place to place quickly, want minimal bulk, and the ability to scan a few documents quickly & easily. If you have any specific questions or would like a certain additional feature tested, please leave a comment below and I will answer you ASAP It's larger and takes more space if you're flying. My thoughts on this model vs. But at this point, the install was easy, the scan quality is good and use is easy, and the device is unbelievably small yet feels "not flimsy" and I couldn't be any more pleased with it's functionality and portability. the S1300: If you travel and set up at a hotel, temporary office or trade table type environment for a few days or all day, or need double sided scanning, the S1300 is a fine option. If you need to scan small stacks of paper, go with the S1300.

As well, a couple features I didn't mention explicitly above: The scanner auto aligns the images-- you don't have to worry about feeding them through exactly straight. This is a FAR superior software feature to the larger S1300-- because it takes a few moments to put down & pick up another receipt. Finally, the software "sits and waits" between receipts you feed through, until you click "finished". The scanner sits patiently and waits for you to feed through as many receipts or pieces of paper as you want, with no urgency I was able to scan them all in about 2 minutes. I've completed my first business trip with 13 pages of various sized receipts, full page receipts, baggage fee wide receipts, etc.

The scanning went perfectly and I'll post a few examples of the scans with no personal info on them as an example of scan quality. Since I've had the scanner I carry it with me in my backpack every day to & from work and everywhere I travel with my work backpack. Still going strong with no issues.

I then learned that the back "door" on the scanner can very easily be removed so the paper feeds straight through without bending it. Another question, and another problem solved easily I recently needed to scan some very plastic like paper and it didn't want to curl upwards to come out of the scanner.

I discovered that the rear door can easily be removed so you can scan hard cards like plastic credit cards, membership cards, etc. right through the unit without bending them at all! Also great for older style hard photos as long as they're not too thick.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M

Two of the Abbyy presets, Scan to Word and Scan to Excel, did not work under Snow Leopard during the testing for our April 2010 print issue. The compact silver and white ScanSnap S1500M is solidly built and connects to your Mac via USB 2. Its one-page test result, at 17 seconds, was the slowest score of four recently tested document scanners, which had scores between 7 and and 15 seconds. In our scanning quality tests, we found the ScanSnap S1500M to be a solid performer, earning Good ratings in all three of our evaluation categories (detail, color and OCR accuracy) Its fold-up design allows it to take up little desktop real estate when not in use. I downloaded the ScanSnap update, but still had problems. Fujitsu told me they'd look into the problem. The CardIris software worked fine, though a bit of editing cleanup was required. The ScanSnap Manager also shows presets for two bundled applications, CardIris business card scanning software, and Abbyy Fine Reader. In terms of speed, the ScanSnap wasn't the fastest document scanner we've tested, but was still impressively quick, taking just 36 seconds for our 10-page test and 18 seconds for our scan to Acrobat test. 2, up from version 4 that came with the scanner, the software worked exactly as you'd expect. Before posting the online version of this review, I went back to check on updates and found an Abby FineReader for ScanSnap update for Snow Leopard. Its automatic document feeder can hold up to 50 sheets, and it can scan both sides of a document simultaneously at a resolution of 600 dpi. We called Fujitsu representatives and pointed me to their Snow Leopard update. After downloading the update, version 4. Fujitsu's ScanSnap Manager software offers a colorfully pleasing interface, with intuitive controls and easy to recognize icons. You can, however, use the ScanSnap Manager to send the scanned files to these applications. Fujitsu's ScanSnap S1500M is an easy to use, attractive sheet-fed scanner. The ScanSnap Manager software comes with presets for scanning to a printer, to a folder, or to e-mail. The ScanSnap S1500M doesn't ship with a TWAIN driver, which would let you initiate a scan from Snow Leopard's built in applications like Image Capture and Preview, or into TWAIN compliant apps like Acrobat Professional 8, a powerful, and expensive, application which the Scan Snap actually includes.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300

Fujitsu's ScanSnap S1300 is easy to carry around, but scanning on the move is only one of its talents. It's also very fast.

It's small and light enough to fit in your travel bag and use with your notebook at that all-important business conference, and when you have the software installed, it's extremely simple to use If you regularly scan documents or large photo collections, it could well prove its worth without ever leaving your home or office desk. The ScanSnap S1300 can be powered through the mains or USB (two ports required).

It's straightforward to configure too, and can scan documents directly to your hard drive, email, printer or iPhoto.

Ten 15x10cm photos scanned as colour JPEGs in one minute, two seconds and one minute, 12 seconds respectively The bundled Cardiris OCR application lets you scan to editable Word and Excel files, it can create searchable PDFs and its Duplex feature scans both sides of a document with one pass through the scanner. Document sizes from A4 to business cards can be scanned in colour, black-and-white or greyscale. In our tests, a 20-page, one-sided text document scanned to PDF in three minutes, 32 seconds under mains power, and just over eight minutes under USB.

Scan quality is also very good, and you can boost quality at the expense of speed if you wish.
Our only real gripe is that the document feeder's 10-sheet capacity (fewer if you're scanning photos or thin card) is a little miserly.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500

The ScanSnap S1500 is one such device, and this Fujitsu ScanSnap review will highlight the pros and cons of the product for anyone looking to create an electronic filing system Recently, a whole class of consumer level scanners has come on the market which makes scanning documents a much easier process. If you scan enough documents or receipts, you will soon learn that a regular all-in-one type printer is just not cut out for serious amounts of scanning.

Product Highlights

  • Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) capable of holding 50 pages
  • Searchable PDF creation
  • Can scan 20 pages per minute
  • Scanner comes with Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard Software
  • Includes an AC cable, AC adapter, and a USB cable
What We Liked About The ScanSnap S1500

Good Scan Quality – The ScanSnap can scan documents in color and black and white at qualities ranging from 600dpi, 300dpi, and 150 dpi. Most users have found it to perform well at all levels, although, you will lose some speed with higher level scans. It can also do pictures, but if you are looking to maintain high photo quality, you may want to consider a dedicated photo scanner.

Smooth Paper Feeding – Some have complained about paper jams with the ScanSnap, but we have found that as long as you keep your documents the same size and at 20# or greater, then the machine has little problems with jams. Virtually every machine will get some type of block, but if you use common sense (flatten and straighten out your papers, monitor odd shaped pages) the scanner will perform as well as many professional grade machines.

Nice Size and Build – When you buy ScanSnap S1500 you don’t have to worry about finding space on your desk for another printer-sized device. The scanner is actually relatively small and is comparable to about the size of a loaf of bread. It is also solidly built and feels rather heavy duty for its compact size.

The Speed – Those used to scanning one page at a time through the flatbed on their printer will be truly awed by the 20 ppm speed of the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner. Even more impressive is that if you are scanning double sided pages, you will actually be getting 40 pages per minute.

Searchable PDFs – This is a handy feature that allows you to save your scanned documents as PDFs, convert them to text, and then search them for specific words. Sometimes the software won’t be able to translate certain words, but it handles most text, and is certainly easier than not being able to search your documents at all. However, the optical character recognition (OCR) is by no means perfect, so if you plan on scanning a lot of papers with the intent of using them as word or excel documents, you may be in for a lot of manual corrections.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Price – The ScanSnap is easy on your wallet, making it an affordable solution for consumers envying the speed of professional grade scanners. Click here for the current Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Price.

What We Didn’t Like About The ScanSnap S1500

No TWAIN Driver – This is probably the biggest complaint from ScanSnap users. The lack of TWAIN driver means that you cannot append an existing PDF file and must rely on Acrobat and the disappointing ScanSnap organization software.

Can’t Handle Staples or Other Thick Items – This is a minor complaint, but not being able to feed through thick items means that you may occasionally still need to use a flatbed scanner.

Poor Software – The software that comes with the scanner is not very user-friendly and somewhat inflexible with its options. It is also loaded with a bunch of unnecessary programs which simply take up space on the computer.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Review Summary

When considering the Fujitsu ScanSnap, you need to remember what it is — a consumer-level scanner, and with that in mind, it does a stellar job. Sure it is not perfect in all things (photo quality, OCR recognition, no TWAIN driver), but if you just need a device that can efficiently scan a large amount of papers for archival purposes, then you can’t beat the speed, quality, and price of the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500. Small business owners, those with home offices, or anyone with a large amount of paperwork will not be disappointed with the efficiency of this machine. Click here for more details.
