Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500

The ScanSnap S1500 is one such device, and this Fujitsu ScanSnap review will highlight the pros and cons of the product for anyone looking to create an electronic filing system Recently, a whole class of consumer level scanners has come on the market which makes scanning documents a much easier process. If you scan enough documents or receipts, you will soon learn that a regular all-in-one type printer is just not cut out for serious amounts of scanning.

Product Highlights

  • Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) capable of holding 50 pages
  • Searchable PDF creation
  • Can scan 20 pages per minute
  • Scanner comes with Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard Software
  • Includes an AC cable, AC adapter, and a USB cable
What We Liked About The ScanSnap S1500

Good Scan Quality – The ScanSnap can scan documents in color and black and white at qualities ranging from 600dpi, 300dpi, and 150 dpi. Most users have found it to perform well at all levels, although, you will lose some speed with higher level scans. It can also do pictures, but if you are looking to maintain high photo quality, you may want to consider a dedicated photo scanner.

Smooth Paper Feeding – Some have complained about paper jams with the ScanSnap, but we have found that as long as you keep your documents the same size and at 20# or greater, then the machine has little problems with jams. Virtually every machine will get some type of block, but if you use common sense (flatten and straighten out your papers, monitor odd shaped pages) the scanner will perform as well as many professional grade machines.

Nice Size and Build – When you buy ScanSnap S1500 you don’t have to worry about finding space on your desk for another printer-sized device. The scanner is actually relatively small and is comparable to about the size of a loaf of bread. It is also solidly built and feels rather heavy duty for its compact size.

The Speed – Those used to scanning one page at a time through the flatbed on their printer will be truly awed by the 20 ppm speed of the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner. Even more impressive is that if you are scanning double sided pages, you will actually be getting 40 pages per minute.

Searchable PDFs – This is a handy feature that allows you to save your scanned documents as PDFs, convert them to text, and then search them for specific words. Sometimes the software won’t be able to translate certain words, but it handles most text, and is certainly easier than not being able to search your documents at all. However, the optical character recognition (OCR) is by no means perfect, so if you plan on scanning a lot of papers with the intent of using them as word or excel documents, you may be in for a lot of manual corrections.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Price – The ScanSnap is easy on your wallet, making it an affordable solution for consumers envying the speed of professional grade scanners. Click here for the current Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Price.

What We Didn’t Like About The ScanSnap S1500

No TWAIN Driver – This is probably the biggest complaint from ScanSnap users. The lack of TWAIN driver means that you cannot append an existing PDF file and must rely on Acrobat and the disappointing ScanSnap organization software.

Can’t Handle Staples or Other Thick Items – This is a minor complaint, but not being able to feed through thick items means that you may occasionally still need to use a flatbed scanner.

Poor Software – The software that comes with the scanner is not very user-friendly and somewhat inflexible with its options. It is also loaded with a bunch of unnecessary programs which simply take up space on the computer.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Review Summary

When considering the Fujitsu ScanSnap, you need to remember what it is — a consumer-level scanner, and with that in mind, it does a stellar job. Sure it is not perfect in all things (photo quality, OCR recognition, no TWAIN driver), but if you just need a device that can efficiently scan a large amount of papers for archival purposes, then you can’t beat the speed, quality, and price of the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500. Small business owners, those with home offices, or anyone with a large amount of paperwork will not be disappointed with the efficiency of this machine. Click here for more details.
